Reason for the name
The park holds the cenotaph in memory of those lost in WWI and WWII from the Mercury Bay area.
The park and cenotaph are where the community holds its ANZAC celebrations each year
The Certificate of Title states that the purpose of the land at 66 Albert Street, Whitianga was "As and for a Soldiers Memorial Park". The proprietor was listed as The Coromandel County Council which is now the Thames-Coromandel District Council.

A number of memorial objects are located in the park, first among them the World War I and II Memorial obelisk (c.1920).
A cannon from the HMS Buffalo, presented by Captain Albert Duder, is associated with the 1840 sinking which gave Buffalo Beach its name.
An in-ground plaque commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War I was installed in 1993.
