315 Memorial Rose Garden, Ferrymead, Christchurch

The story

315 Memorial Rose Garden and Fountain, Ferrymead, Christchurch.

Reason for the name

This memorial rose garden and fountain was named in honour of the 21 men from the Addington Railway Workshops who lost their lives in World War 2.

This World War 2 memorial rose garden and fountain is part of the Ferrymead Heritage Park. It was originally situated at the old Addington Railway Workshops and was moved to the Park when the Workshops were demolished. It commemorates 21 men from the Workshops who went away during World War 2 and died on active service.

A small entrance fee to The Ferrymead Heritage Park is required. This allows everyone to visit all other exhibits and buildings in the Park. For example the heritage cottages, tram rides, model railway and hall of Flames.  In the Park almost every building, exhibit and maintenance is carried out by volunteers.

The stories of these men are a brief glimpse of the friendship, courage and sadness of men lost in time of war. Among the men, eleven joined the Royal NZ Air Force, nine served in the 2nd NZ Expeditionary Force (2NZEF) and one served in the Royal NZ Navy.

During the commemorations in the rose garden held in 2018 a member of the Heritage Roses Group spoke of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) which manages Commonwealth war graves world-wide. Within these cemeteries these men have found peace.

Research has determined that the 21 Railway workers left Christchurch in 1940, with their many mates waving and cheering, on their last train journey to the Port of Lyttleton. They died during the years 1940 – 1945.

They are buried in 10 different countries in CWGC cemeteries. These are Crete, Denmark, Egypt, England, Germany, Iraq, Italy, Libya, New Caledonia and Tunisia. The final resting places of these men are peaceful beautiful places softened by colourful plantings often reflecting the country from which the men came. Four men are buried in Christchurch and another is commemorated in the NZ Naval Memorial, Devonport Naval Base Auckland.

The Memorial Rose Garden and Fountain was originally planted in the Addington Workshops several years after the war ended in 1945. Prior to the demolition of the workshops in the 1990s the memorial was relocated to Ferrymead Heritage Park.

Commemoration

315 Memorial Rose Garden Christchurch Commemoration programme cover

The photograph showing the front cover of the Rose Garden Archway is the small booklet put together telling the story of the Memorial Garden and the roses. The booklet is available  for $10 with all proceeds going to the maintenance of the Memorial Rose Garden. Booklets are available at the office entrance to the Park.

During the Canterbury Show weekend in November 2018, the Heritage Roses group of 5 together with help from Bruce Shalders (Rail Heritage Trust) and the Ferrymead Heritage Park personnel arranged a commemoration within the park beside the rose garden. Everyone was invited by invitation and the descendants of three of the men attended.

Josh Matsis (Park Property Manager) personally made 21 beautiful metal poppies which were placed around the brick memorial.

Bruce Shalders together with the Railway Heritage Trust placed two large outdoor information boards detailing the “Workshops at War 1939-1945” with the “Roll of Honour”. The other board tells of life in the Addington Workshops.

Speakers included a family member who spoke passionately of the family’s loss of their very young 22 year old who joined the Royal NZ Navy and went down with his ship.

Bruce Shalders (Rail Heritage Trust) welcomed the families of the men lost and spoke of the war and the workshops.

Jude Turner spoke about the CWGC and the resting place of the men.

Angela Whitehead was the MC for the commemorations. After the speeches, drinks and sandwiches were offered to all.
